Your
house is your larger body. It grows in the sun and sleeps in the
stillness of the night; and it is not dreamless. Does not your
house dream? And dreaming, leave the city for grove or hill-top?"
- Kahlil Gibran, Prophet.
Our
homes do more than protect us from the elements and keep us warm
when it is cold. There is more to our home than the structure,
floors, bricks and mortar. Our homes contain, support and nourish
our Spirit, our bodies and our minds. There is a symbiotic relationship
we have with our space. When we first move in, we begin to shape
the space with our belongings, the colors we paint, the music
we play, the food we cook, etc. It becomes home as we move in,
get settled and surround ourselves with things we like and are
familiar with.
At
the same time we are shaping the space, it is shaping us. When
you enter, where do you put your bag or briefcase? Where is the
light switch and which way does the door open? Which cabinet contains
what and where does this, that or the other go? Is there an uneven
step or a door that sticks? As we move in, we become familiar
with the nuances of the space. We shape it as it shapes us. Our
home is our mini-world. We need and want someplace where we feel
safe, can hang our hat and seek refuge from the sometimes frightening
world out there. Our home is protection, often times sought to
be a sanctuary where we replenish ourselves, feed our spirit and
rest our bodies. It is believed that 'what you give, you will
also receive'. The intention, care, maintenance which you contribute
to your space will in turn be returned to you as the house supports
you. The environment within which we practice this art ought to
support us in mind, body and spirit. Is it nurturing? Does it
smell good? Do we love the furniture, rugs and artwork? Does it
feel good? If yes isn't the answer to all these questions, I would
ask why you aren't taking better care of yourself and tending
to your highest needs? Not to fret, help is on the way - Just
Get Rid of It and Helpful Hints will have you humming and answering
yes to these questions and life in general!
